Hormones in drinking water

Does tap water contain hormones? That’s quite possible. Steroid hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone, can end up in the surface water via wastewater. Water companies treat this water, after which it will flow out of your tap. The water may still contain traces of hormones. Not a pleasant thought, if you ask us.

Hormones in drinking water from the tap

Micropollutants are a problem worldwide. The water from your tap is not as pure as you might think. Not only can it contain contaminants such as leadmicroplastics or dangerous bacteria, it may also contain hormones or endocrine disruptors. The problem with hormones and endocrine disruptors is that even in very small quantities they can severely impact your natural hormone balance. Hormones in your drinking water, you don’t want that.

What hormones may be present in tap water?

Drinking water can be contaminated with hormones and endocrine disruptors. Hormones are natural substances, produced by your own body, that regulate certain processes in your body and provide balance. Endocrine disruptors are also called pseudo-hormones. They are substances that do not naturally occur in your body, but that cause a reaction similar to that of hormones naturally produced by the body.

Female hormones (estrogen) in particular may be present in drinking water. These hormones are found in birth controls pill and other medication and women excrete them in their urine. After a visit to the toilet, the hormones are flushed down and end up in the sewage system. Unfortunately, sewage treatment plants are not able to filter all medicine residues – such as hormones – out of the wastewater. This means that the contaminated water ends up in the surface water, one of the primary sources of water for water companies. And that’s how these hormones will eventually flow out of your tap.

A well-known endocrine disruptor is BPA (bisphenol A), a chemical used in the production of plastics (read more about microplastics in your water). BPA imitates the effects of estrogen in the body and can therefore severely disrupt hormone levels. BPA also negatively impacts people and the environment in other ways, such as by an increased risk of food intolerance. In other words: BPA is not a substance that you want in your body.

What are the consequences of hormones in drinking water?

There is still a lot of uncertainty about how harmful hormones in tap water are. This is more due to the fact that it is unclear how many hormones the water contains, rather than to the question whether hormones and endocrine disruptors are dangerous for your health. In fact, there is no doubt about the latter: an excess of hormones or endocrine disruptors has a negative effect on your health. For example, a disruption of the natural physical hormonal regulation is linked to infertility, birth defects, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.
